В этом месяце сервис по найму такси Uber впервые предоставит своим клиентам из Питтсбурга (Пенсильвания) возможность воспользоваться для поездки самоуправляемым автомобилем.
Для этих целей будет задействован парк переоборудованных внедорожников Volvo XC90, за рулём которых для подстраховки будет находиться водитель. Как сообщается, первые поездки на автономных автомобилях будут бесплатными. Заказать автономное такси можно будет воспользовавшись приложением Uber.
Парк автономных транспортных средств Uber состоит из специально модифицированных спортивных автомобилей Volvo XC90, оснащённых десятками датчиков, камер, лазеров, радаром и GPS-приемником. Volvo Cars обязалась поставить Uber до конца 2016 года 100 автономных внедорожников. Ранее в этом году компании подписали соглашение с целью создания полностью автономной машины, которая будет готова к эксплуатации на дорогах к 2021 году. На этот проект планируется израсходовать $300 млн.

В конце 2014 года соучредитель и главный исполнительный директор Uber Трэвис Каланик (Travis Kalanick) был в Питтсбурге со специальной миссией: нанять известных экспертов в области создания автономных транспортных средств. Здесь находится факультет робототехники Университета Карнеги-Меллона (Carnegie Mellon University, CMU), давший немало известных имён разработчиков этого направления.
Себастьян Трун (Sebastian Thrun), создатель проекта беспилотных автомобилей Google, провёл здесь семь лет, занимаясь разработкой автономных роботов, а бывший главный технический директор проекта Google Крис Урмсон (Chris Urmson) был аспирантом CMU.
